5 main causes of generalized edema on children (2)

In 5 main causes of generalized edema in children (1) , we talked about the Renal , Cardiac and allergic causes , and how for the mother to differentiate between the diferrent types of edema and its causes . In this article we will talk about the other causes of generalized eema in children which are Hepatic causes ( causes
related to the liver ) and Nutritional causes of generalized edema .

4-Hepatic : causes related to the liver leading to edema is very characteristic clinically in any child or even adult with generalized edema and can be confirmed easily by investigations for the enzymes of the liver and other liver function tests . The patient will be jaundiced ( which is yellow discoloration of the skin and the mucous membranes all over the body ) , also other manifestation of liver affection may be present as pain the site of the liver ( the right hypochondrium ) . Also ascites is a common manifestation in the edema caused by liver disease .
5-Nuritional ; nutritional causes of generalized edema in children is now in  developed countries a rare cause , but in many developing countries nutritional causes of generalized edema is still a common cause . Examples of nutritional causes is deficiency In the protein content of the diet and other aggressive disease which is common in Africa as Marasmus , Kwashiorkor and Marasmic Kwashiorkor . Cause of edema is mainly deficiency in the protein in diet leading to decreased protein in body fluid , this leads to increase in the infiltration of the fluid from inside the vessel to outside , and by effects of hormones as ADH ( anti diuretic hormone ) and Aldosterone , the retention of salt and water increases inside the body . Edema is usually in the most dependent parts of the body  in the sole of the foot and then ascends .
